USS THRESHER MEMORIAL PARK PLAN APPROVED June 13, 2013 for Immediate Release
Work on a new Kittery Memorial Park with a USS Thresher Memorial will begin this summer, as organizers anticipated, after the Town Planning Board approved the plan tonight with 6 in favor and 1 abstained.
Also approved was the Memorial Circle - USS Thresher Memorial Flagpole base 25 feet in diameter with naturally shimmering black granite, a flag light, and two outer rings of landscaped planters. Two of the planters will include granite monuments 8’ long x 2’-6” tall x 8” thick inscribed USS THRESHER 10 April 1963.
Memorial Park, on the east side of Town Hall will feature a 40’ diameter “Circle of Honor” with a USS Thresher Memorial Courtyard 24 feet x 24 feet with donor engraved granite and architectural pavers, a granite monument with a bronze plaque including all 129 persons onboard the submarine, granite benches, flowering trees, and a 75’ diameter outer ring of Golden Thread Cypress shrubs. The park plan also includes future memorials to other men and women that have served our country, and a tree lined view toward the USS Thresher Memorial Flagpole.
Funding for the improvements are from public and private donations according to the Thresher Memorial Project Group.
